Have you wondered why God calls some to be colporteurs?

What is it like to work as a literature evangelist? What would you say to the people you visit? How can you give people you meet a quick presentation that covers the areas of health and spirituality without sounding too preachy? How do people respond to it? How can you find people who need our books, especially in today's "marketed to death" society? If you could have a booth at a fair to talk to people, would you like the secret of some healthy samples you can give away that will make your booth the most popular attraction at the fair?

"Wherever we are, we should watch for opportunities of speaking to others of the Saviour. If we follow Christ's example in doing good, hearts will open to us as they did to Him. Not abruptly, but with tact born of divine love, we can tell them of Him who is the 'Chiefest among ten thousand,' and the One 'altogether lovely.' Canticles 5:10,16 (Song of Solomon) This is the very highest work in which we can employ the talent of speech. It was given to us that we might present Christ as the sin-pardoning Saviour." - Colporteur Ministry, pp. 74, 75

In this presentation at the Novato church in June 2008, Robert Fournier, a literature evangelist for over 30 years and currently a leader giving colporteur training, gives a presentation that answers these questions and more. Maybe after you explore this presentation, you'll feel that this is a work that you too can do too.

"Those who work for Christ are to be upright and trustworthy, firm as a rock to principle, and at the same time kind and courteous. Courtesy is one of the graces of the Spirit. To deal with human minds is the greatest work ever given to man; and he who would find access to hearts must heed the injunction, 'Be pitiful, be courteous.' (1 Peter 3:8) Love will do that which argument will fail to accomplish." Colporteur Ministry, p. 72

We appreciate your taking a moment to explore this presentation, and sharing this video with your friends. Even if you don't feel a calling to full time literature evangelism work, please include literature evangelists in your prayers.

"One of the simplest, yet most effective methods of labor is that of the canvasser evangelist. By courteous behavior and kindness such a worker may open the door of many homes... Sometimes he will find men who say they are too busy to listen to a canvass or a Bible reading. Often he may gain their attention by helping them in their work." (Colporteur Ministry pp. 88, 89)

We appreciate your prayers, and thank you for considering our book store for colporteur family classics the next time you are buying gifts.

Colporteur definition: What is a colporteur?

The word colporteur refers to someone who sells devotional and religious books, such as Bibles, children's books, and health books. It comes from an old French word comporteur, from comporter, meaning to conduct, or peddle, and influenced by the word col, neck, from the idea that peddlers carry their wares on trays suspended from straps around their necks, or that they carried their books from town to town in a bag carried on their neck.

Colportage is the distribution of religious publications, books, tracts, etc., by carriers called colporteurs. The American Bible Society and the American Tract Society were among the largest organizations involved in colportage in the United States. Many people thankfully trace their family faith to the day when they, their parents, or grandparents, were visited by a colporteur.

Today this word is not often used outside of religious circles. Today most colporteurs refer to themselves as Christian literature evangelists engaging in literature evangelism. Another accurate term might be literature missionary.
